Ventive Hospitality’s Anantara Dhigu Maldives Unveils An Innovative New Age Reef Restoration Initiative

Ventive Hospitality Ltd has unveiled an innovative marine restoration initiative at Anantara Dhigu Maldives, bringing together sustainability, science and long-term ecosystem stewardship through advanced 3D-printed reef restoration technology.

Developed in collaboration with Swiss marine restoration organisation Rrreefs, a women-founded company specialising in science-led reef restoration solutions, Anantara’s marine biology team and Aquafanatics have initiated one of Maldives’ pioneering deployments of advanced Artificial Clay Reef (ACR) systems. This system is designed to support coral regeneration and long-term marine biodiversity enhancement.

As part of the initiative, 13 modular reef structures spanning nearly 150 square metres of seabed were installed adjacent to the resort’s SFS Coral Nursery. Built using specially designed 3D-printed terracotta reef modules inspired by natural reef formations, the structures create stable underwater habitats that encourage natural coral recruitment, marine biodiversity and ecological regeneration over time.

The initiative comes at a time when coral ecosystems globally continue to face rising climate stress, bleaching events and environmental degradation. Instead of intervention-heavy restoration, the project follows a science-led passive restoration approach allowing ecosystems to recover naturally while minimising stress on surrounding coral communities.

For Ventive Hospitality, the initiative reflects a broader belief that hospitality must move from being only experience-led to becoming responsibility-led.

Because destinations cannot be sustained unless the ecosystems around them are protected.

Commenting on the initiative, Ranjit Batra, CEO, Ventive Hospitality Ltd, said: “Hospitality destinations are only as resilient as the ecosystems that sustain them. In the Maldives, where more than 80% of land just lies 1.5 metre above sea level, protecting marine ecosystems is fundamental to the future of tourism.

Our reef restoration initiative at Anantara Dhigu Maldives reflects Ventive Hospitality’s long-term commitment to responsible destination stewardship. It builds on our ongoing reef protection efforts across the three Anantara properties, where the Holistic Approach to Reef Protection (HARP) programme has integrated 14,455 coral fragments over eight years.

By combining science-led conservation, innovative 3D-printed reef technology and sustained ecological monitoring, at Ventive Hospitality we are continuously investing in stronger biodiversity and creating lasting value for local communities and future generations.”

The initiative also brought together over 35 volunteers, marine experts and resort teams across reef deployment, underwater construction and scientific monitoring activities, making the project a collaborative conservation effort rooted in science, sustainability and community participation.

Going forward, the reef systems will continue to be monitored through biodiversity assessments, coral recruitment studies and planned 3D photogrammetry mapping aimed at evaluating long-term ecological development and habitat regeneration.

As hospitality continues to evolve globally, Ventive Hospitality believes the industry’s next era will not only be defined by the destinations it creates, but by the positive and lasting impact it leaves behind.
