Ontlametse Tizzar Batisi

Ontlametse Tizzar Batisi joined Great Plains in April 2023 taking on the role of General Manager at Okavango Explorers Camp, located in the western part of the Selinda Concession in northern Botswana. At the beginning of 2025, he transitioned to managing the luxurious Sitatunga Private Island in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Unlike other camps,

Sitatunga offers a uniquely serene safari experience centered around water-based activities such as mokoro excursions, boat safaris, and guided bush walks. This is the newest Botswana property in the Great Plains portfolio and it is truly exceptional! Tizzar’s journey in hospitality and conservation continues to be driven by a deep respect for nature and a commitment to creating unforgettable experiences in the wild.

He was born and raised in Maun, Botswana, where he completed most of his schooling. His upbringing was deeply influenced by his grandmother, a dedicated farmer in the remote village of Samedupi just outside Maun. Her close connection to the land and nature inspired Tizzar’s own lifelong passion for the wilderness and farming – she always encouraged her grandson to be hospitable and welcoming. He was always surrounded by hospitality growing up.

Little did Tizzar know this would eventually become his path professionally, this happened by chance but proved to be his destiny. He holdS an Associate Degree in Business Management and a Level 3 Lodge Management Certificate. He has  spent over 15 years working as a lodge manager and professional safari guide previously working in the company at Great Plains Okavango Explorers Camp along with his former roles at Natural Selection and Wilderness Safaris.

What makes your current assignment standout from other properties you have worked in?

‎What makes my current assignment standout is the experience and activities that Great Plains Sitatunga Private Island offers: the quietness and relaxed feeling but yet exclusive experience, makes guests and staff alike connect to the nature around them producing full satisfaction.

Sitatunga Private Island is a water-based Réserve-Collection Safari Camp in the upper reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The camp is the latest Botswana opening for Great Plains constructed almost entirely of recycled materials – there are truly no properties like it!

Who is your typical customer?

‎Our guests are from all the corners of the world, majority are from America but we host a fair share of Europeans as well. We are privileged to welcome a very international clientele.

If you could plan a one day itinerary for guests looking to explore Botswana, where would you send them?

‎I will definitely convince them to come spend that special day at Sitatunga, as this is a very unique area that will get you hooked on beautiful Botswana and make you feel connected to the inspiring variety of nature around you. Our guests arrive in style at the island by helicopter and we create a bespoke itinerary based on your energy levels after long travels and whether you want to be out on the water to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos or arranging a walking safari . We also encourage spoiling our guests in the camp with some of our delicious cuisine. We provide guests with the most authentic ‘Robinson Crusoe’-inspired experience and a refuge for the soul in the Okavango Delta.

Building the right team is crucial for a property ‘s success. What are the key skills you look for when hiring new employees.

My management style is hands-on, people-focused, and adaptable. I believe in leading by example and being present—not just to oversee operations, but to support and empower my team. I create an environment where communication is open and everyone feels valued, because I’ve seen how motivated teams deliver the best guest experiences. At the same time, I’m results-driven and proactive in solving problems, always balancing guest satisfaction, staff well-being, and operational efficiency. I also adjust my approach depending on the situation—whether it’s mentoring a junior team member, handling a guest concern, or making strategic decisions for the camp.

A positive mindset is a top quality I strive for in my team. Finding someone who is willing to learn and taking constructive criticism positively are key skills I look for.

What is the USP of your hotel

‎Our USP at Sitatunga Private Island is the tranquility and serenity that the camp offers, this is a feeling that you are not likely to get anywhere else and one of the only places where you can spot the elusive sitatunga antelope. Our camp activities include walking safaris, mokoro and water-based excursions- these are all relaxing outdoor activities that let you appreciate every little sound of nature and you end up connecting to the natural surroundings unknowingly.

Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property as we are pushing the eco-design boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation.

What is the one dish that guests have to try when at your hotel?

It’s hard to choose just one dish when the menu changes daily – but the Slow Braised Lamb Goulash is really delicious and best enjoyed under the stars. In warmer weather, the Miso Poached Salmon is a must! It is served with white bean curry, green beans, asparagus and citrus salad topped with pistachio.‎

Was a career in hospitality something you always dreamt of? What is your advice to aspiring hoteliers?

I’ve always been passionate about nature, people, and delivering exceptional experiences. Being surrounded by Botswana’s natural beauty and vibrant tourism industry inspired me early on. As I grew in my career, working in various roles from administration to guiding and eventually into management, I realized that lodge management brings together everything I value—leadership, problem-solving, guest satisfaction, and conservation. What truly drew me in was the opportunity to create a positive impact, not just for guests, but for local communities and the environment. It’s a dynamic and fulfilling role where I can use my skills to make a real difference every day.

My advice to aspiring hoteliers would be: be patient, stay curious, and never stop learning. Start with a strong work ethic, be willing to take on any role, and always show respect to the team around you—everyone has something to teach you. In this industry, attitude matters as much as skill. If you’re passionate, adaptable, and focused on giving guests a great experience, you’ll grow faster than you think. And most importantly, take pride in every detail—it’s the small things that make a big difference. Remain positive and wait for that one chance and grab it and never let go until your dreams are achieved.

When are you happiest?

‎I am happiest when at the end of each day, my guests are happy, plans for the day are achieved or progressing, and my team is motivated. This is pure happiness for me.

At work, which is your most challenging activity and why?

I have to apply myself on every duty at work which is a challenge – either by planning, supervising or ensuring things get done myself. Early in my career, I was very hands-on and focused on operations, but with time I’ve learned the value of empowering others and creating strong team dynamics. Every experience has been a lesson, and I believe the challenges I faced along the way helped me grow into a more effective and well-rounded manager.
